“How do people really react to the ongoing permacrisis we are in right now? To the endless news of devastation? To the feeling of not wanting to think about the future? To being stuck and not finding solutions? In times of uncertainty and overwhelmness, rather than acting, people often seek ways to escape from reality. They decide to live in an imaginative palace of
Versailles for a while, eat as many cakes as they want, wear pastelles and roses and lace and put aside the problems for later. This issue is dedicated to exploring escapism and how we can link 18th centuries France to today’s society and fashion. We want to ask ourselves where we draw the line between innocently escaping reality and ignorantly hiding from the truth of our current world.

“Because there is one thing that is always hiding under the cakes and bows or in the back of your head as you escape reality through scrolling on TikTok while you hear the news about climate change. And that is reality. Although AI and robots could take over the world in a couple of years, we are, in fact, still living in the real world. That is a fact you can not escape
from.“

My photo series Reality Check is aiming to showcase the distaste and disgustness that is created when there is too much of reality escaping in our lives. If you look closer, you will eventually find the ugliness that lies inside of it. Therefore I chose to use things that are seen as beautiful and luxurious such as roses, berries, and cake and put it together into something disgusting, almost looking like trash.
