“I remember the first ballet performance I ever went to as a child. It was Alice in Wonderland, and my mom took me there, maybe as a way of alluring me into wanting to start dancing myself, for she had this hidden dream of me, as her only daughter, being a ballet dancer.

I remember the fascination I felt. The obsession. It was something almost religious in the movements. But it made me ask myself a question. What really is a ballerina? Ballerinas are associated with graciousness, effortlessness, beauty and fragility.

But they are far more than that, for underneath the layer of their baby pink pointes there is a trace. A trace of crooked toes, forced to stand upright, day in and day out. A trace of the strength and skill needed to compel their body into the most unnatural movements. A trace of the endless leaps, levitations and landings on the hard wooden floor.”
